Agri-TechE's October Newsletter

In the month that our Agri-Tech Week programme celebrated its 13th year, building on a legacy of more than 110 farm walks, seminars, workshops and events since 2014, conversations across the sector focused on two recurring themes: how innovation reaches farmers, and who influences its direction.

World Food Day adopted the theme "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow", while a new date was finally confirmed for the second UK-EU Summit in Brussels on 20 November, with discussions expected to advance plans for a new SPS agreement covering areas ranging from plant protection products and organics to animal health and disease control.

Elsewhere, the launch of the Peat Free Pathway highlighted the collaboration needed to tackle horticulture's transition away from peat. And Defra announced up to £28 million for projects focused on healthy soils and water management, a much larger funding commitment than we had been expecting.

The government also signalled a growing appetite to devolve innovation funding and decision-making to the regions. Among the latest initiatives is HARVEST, one of eight new Robotics Adoption Hubs funded by Innovate UK, aiming to help bridge the gap between robotics innovation and real-world deployment across agriculture and food production. But more on that below...

Read on for the latest agri-tech news, events and opportunities from across the Agri-TechE ecosystem.

Monthly Musing

For a long time, one of the criticisms being levelled at agricultural innovation was that too much of it happened without farmers. While that description still holds true in some cases, there are changes afoot, moving away from a linear pipeline in favour of a more collaborative ‘circle’.

The ‘future of farming’ shouldn’t be discussed without farmers in the room
