A 'Well-Adapted UK' and the Medici Effect

Agri-TechE's May Newsletter

In the month that the Climate Change Committee warned the UK is not yet “well‑adapted” to climate risk, the King’s Speech set out two measures of relevance to farming and agri‑tech.

The government confirmed a Clean Water Bill, aimed at tightening oversight of water companies and strengthening agricultural pollution rules as part of wider efforts to improve river and water quality. The King also announced a new European Partnership Bill, creating the legal framework for sector‑specific agreements with the EU - including measures intended to ease agri‑food trade and reduce SPS‑related friction.

With Defra taking on only one new legislative item, ministers now have more scope to progress non‑legislative priorities such as the food strategy implementation plan, the Farming Profitability Review response, ELM/SFI redesign, and delivery of the Land Use Framework.

Across the ecosystem, Agri-TechE members have been busy: ADAS launched LUMEO, a new land‑use optimisation tool using satellite data and machine learning; Syngenta began work on its new BioSTaR research facility at Jealott’s Hill; and Rothamsted Research outlined its five‑year transformation plan.

But there's more... Find the latest agri-tech news, events and opportunities below - enjoy!

Medici Family image
Monthly Musing

The Medici family created space for artists, scientists, philosophers, engineers and mathematicians to work together leading to the Renaissance. Johansson's 'The Medici Effect' argues that innovation emerges at “the intersection of fields, disciplines, and cultures,” where people can change the rules of the game.

A Well Adapted UK front cover
Hot Topic

The UK’s fourth independent climate risk review, A Well-Adapted UK, has landed with a familiar and sobering reminder for agri and horti: the impacts are here, the risks are escalating, adaptation is not optional. But the report also points to something more hopeful - with the sector looking very different by mid‑century.

CCC asks: what could “viable farming” mean by 2050?
Did you see?

From scientific discovery to on‑farm practice, evidence thresholds vary. With tighter budgets and rising urgency, we’ll explore how shared expectations can speed adoption, strengthen investment decisions and deliver scalable, trusted agri‑tech solutions. REAP 2026 asks: when is innovation “good enough”?

From Promise to Practice - the REAP theme is announced.
