People for Projects
Access world-class talent to add value to your business, drive innovation, forge relationships with researchers and lay the foundations for your next recruitment.
How can your business benefit?
At Agri-TechE, we have world-leading research organisations specialising in different disciplines that are keen to build partnerships with industry.
Whether solving a problem, delivering an innovative project or undertaking some market research, there are mechanisms that you can tap into to access the pool of talent in the UK research space.
Bringing in the latest thinking, analytical mindset and fresh knowledge from research and academia can add significant value to your organisation.
This doesn’t have to be agriculture related; expertise from other sectors such as engineering, computing, data science are available.
As a non-academic, this space can be confusing to navigate – but we can help by putting you in touch with the institute that has the knowledge you need, and unpack some of the funding options open to you.
Some of the expertise on offer:
- Data collection, processing and analysis
- Plant/soil/microbial sciences
- Experimental and trial design
- Engineering
- Computing, programming and coding
- Report-writing
- Data and information mining
- Use of artificial intelligence
- Content creation for social media
What funded mechanisms are available?
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)
- Collaborative funding
- One to three years
- Up to £100,000 available funding per year
A KTP is a three-way collaboration between a business or not-for-profit organisation, an academic team and a qualified graduate. It is part-funded by Innovate UK, with the remaining contribution of project costs from the business. These partnerships can help your business drive innovation by gaining new knowledge, new capabilities and new ways of working. And with up to £100,000 of the project cost funded per year, KTPs take the risk out of your innovation strategy.

BBSRC Stand Alone LINK
- Collaborative funding
- From 12 months to four years – project length dependent on funding round
- Up to 50 % funding available from BBSRC
LINK supports collaborative research projects between at least one company and one academic partner.
As a business, it is an opportunity for you to get financial support for the project, build a closer relationship with the science base in the UK and the possibility to recruit trained staff at the end of the project.
At least 50% of the full project cost comes from industry. Applications should be for pre-competitive research that would not be undertaken in this form without LINK support. Funding is only available for organisations eligible for Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) support. The company partner should either be registered in the UK or have a UK research and development or manufacturing site.

Industrial Partnership Awards (IPAs)
- Collaborative funding
- From 12 months to five years – project length dependent on funding round
- Research-led project
IPAs encourage and support collaboration between academic research groups and industry. A cash contribution of at least 10 % of the total project cost is expected. The company partner should either be registered in the UK or have a UK research and development or manufacturing site.
Postgraduate consultancy team projects
- From two to six months at different times of the year
- Funded by the degree course
A number of universities offer businesses the opportunity for a group of knowledgeable and skilled postgraduates to work on a specific project, suitable for those more timely projects that would benefit from a consultancy approach.
These groups are a great opportunity for you to do some market research, evaluate different business models or assess the strategic priorities before embarking on a larger project, for example.

Professional Internships for PhD Students (PIPS)
- Research-led funding
- Three months
- Student stipend is funded
For shorter and more specific projects, PIPS might be more suitable. They are compulsory non-academic placements for PhD students funded by research councils like the BBSRC through Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) and Doctoral Landscape Awards, lasting a minimum of three months.
Summer internships/placements
