Product Manager
About the Job
Responsibilities
This is a hands-on, 0→1 role with real ownership, reporting to the CEO. You’ll work closely with our science, engineering, and commercial teams to translate cutting-edge discovery technology — spanning computational and experimental workstreams — into partner-ready trait programs, help determine where we invest next as a company, and lay the foundations of Biographica’s product discipline as we scale.
In the first year, your mandate is to translate Biographica’s discovery capabilities into two coherent product streams: 1) a focused portfolio of clearly scoped trait programs with strong early partner engagement, and 2) the next iteration of our computational discovery software for discovery partnerships — while building the product discipline that makes this work repeatable as we scale.
• Build and run our customer discovery engine: lead prospecting and discovery interviews, synthesising insights and turning conversations into sharp problem definitions, ICPs, and high-conviction opportunity areas.
• Shape our product bets: develop a structured opportunity evaluation model and lead the definition of clear product specifications and value propositions for trait programs and discovery partnerships, under scientific, technical, and commercial uncertainty.
• Define stage gates and decision frameworks: establish success criteria and investment decision points for trait programs across discovery, validation, and commercial readiness, ensuring we invest deeply only when signal justifies it.
• Drive product roadmap development: refine and iterate on our customer-led, tech-informed product roadmap across both product streams, integrating strategy, prioritisation, and end-to-end delivery.
• Tighten the feedback loop (market ↔ model ↔ tech / lab): co-design experimental assays and modelling capabilities with the tech and science teams so that our lab and computational work directly supports the product roadmap, accelerating partner delivery while de-risking key product assumptions.
• Link scientific and product milestones to commercial value: partner with the CEO to link scientific and product milestones to commercial value, shaping deal structures, pricing hypotheses, and IP strategies for early partnerships.
• Lay foundations for Biographica’s product discipline: turn instincts into reusable product processes and tools, and contribute to the design and hiring of the future product team.
About You
Competencies
We’re looking for a unique blend of curiosity, technical literacy, and product intuition — someone who thrives on turning ambiguity into clarity and science into impact.
• Discovery & synthesis: Skilled at gathering information through primary research and interviews, with sharp analysis to enable timely decisions.
• Technical literacy: Comfortable working with computational models and experimental workflows; asks incisive questions that bridge disciplines.
• Product judgment: Strong instincts for scoping lean MVPs and experiments, defining sharp success metrics, and identifying critical risks early.
• Ownership & execution: Thrives in a high-autonomy startup environment, with a bias to thoughtful action, exceptional written communication, structured thinking, and high follow-through.
• Commercial intuition: Ability to connect market signals to product decisions, inform pilots and partnerships, and shape commercial hypotheses without losing sight of the big picture.
• Mission resonance: Deep curiosity for life sciences, passion for applying AI in biology, motivation to solve urgent global problems, and humility in building.
Background
• Experience in product, program, or strategy roles within (ag)biotech, deep-tech/data companies (from startups to scaleups), agriculture or seed companies, or life sciences consulting, with a track record of translating complex technical capabilities into clear product and commercial outcomes.
• Academic or professional background in computational biology, systems biology, bioinformatics, ML for biology, or related fields.
• Track record of producing tangible outputs from technical information (e.g. market analyses, product briefs, discovery syntheses) that unlock clarity.
• Nice to have: Exposure to gene editing, single-cell data, or wet-lab workflows.
• Nice to have: Agriculture or seed-industry experience.
About Us
🌽 Safeguarding the future of food.
Biographica is on a mission to accelerate the development of more productive, sustainable, nutritious, and climate-resilient food sources. To achieve this, we’re building the world’s first ML-driven trait discovery platform for crop gene-editing – enabling faster, more confident decisions about which traits to develop and bring to market.
We’ve built a computational discovery engine that can identify and rank gene targets for a given crop trait in a matter of weeks, and design precise gene edits to achieve the desired trait effect. Today, this engine underpins discovery partnerships with leading seed companies: we deliver novel trait genetics through a software application that integrates directly into partners’ experimental testing pipelines. As we expand our in-house lab capabilities, we’re now validating our designed genetics experimentally and advancing our first internal trait programs. This allows us to move beyond discovery alone — providing partners with increasingly de-risked, validated traits while laying the foundation for repeatable, end-to-end product development.
We recently announced a £7M funding round and expanded our portfolio of partnerships to include BASF | Nunhems, one of the world’s leading seed companies. We’re backed by world-class investors and guided by deep scientific and technical expertise. Our team of scientists, engineers, and operators are working at the interface of life sciences and technology to solve one of humanity’s most urgent problems: how to feed the world sustainably.
👥 Team
Led by co-founders Dom (CTO) and Cecy (CEO), we are now a team of 13, including ML engineers, data engineers, computational biologists, experimental scientists and an operations team. We primarily work together in person from our office in Spitalfields, London, 4 days per week, and have a lab in Rothamsted. This role will be based in London.
Why join us?
• Shape the product from day one: As our first product hire, you — alongside the CEO — will define how Biographica builds products and engages with markets.
• Grow as we grow: A clear path from Product Manager to Product Lead.
• Work at the frontier of AI × biology: Apply breakthroughs in machine learning and gene editing to one of the world’s most urgent problems.
