Growing Health – Exploring the Link Between Agriculture and Nutrition
It’s an appealing narrative that certain agricultural practices, such as improving soil health, can enhance the nutritional quality of food crops. However, many internal and external factors can affect the levels of compounds in plants that influence human health. This makes it a complex, multidimensional challenge to understand how changes in farming practices might demonstrably improve nutrition and health.
The link between agriculture and human and animal health is increasingly being explored in the concept of One Agriculture, which Agri-TechE pioneered at REAP 2022 and which was inspired by the WTO’s “One Health” agenda.
Join us as we explore the underpinning science revealing links between farming practices and food products, and discuss the experimental research needed to validate claims around the influence of how a crop is grown, or an animal, bird or fish is managed, on overall nutrition and health.
We will consider topics including sustainable farming practices, soil health, crop diversity, food production methods and their implications for healthy diets. Bringing together perspectives from agriculture, nutrition and food systems, this event will provide an opportunity to discuss current challenges, emerging approaches and how – if at all - agricultural practices can contribute to improving nutrition and supporting healthier, more sustainable food systems.
