An introduction to Plant Variety Rights
New Genomic Technologies (NGTs) are set to expand the capabilities of crop breeding (and, eventually, livestock), and we'll be talking about how this might impact the Plant Variety Rights regulations for those generating crops with novel traits.
Plant Variety Rights (PVR), or Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR), are intellectual property rights granting breeders exclusive control over new, distinct, uniform, and stable plant varieties for 25–30 years. Crucially, they enable holders to manage the commercialization journeys, license production, and collect royalties on propagating material.
We'll be exploring how the deployment of technologies such as gene-editing, and the new platforms that are helping inform the processes, would influence the regulatory pathways and business models for future new variety production.
Speakers featured:

Carsten Reinhard, Associate, European Patent Attorney, UK Patent Attorney
Carsten is a senior member of the firm’s plant sciences team. His practice focuses on patent matters in agricultural biotechnology and microbiology. He has wide-ranging experience in technologies such as CRISPR/Cas genome editing, plant disease resistance genes and effectors, insecticidal proteins and entomopathogens, as well as transformation and genotyping methods, and has prosecuted a number of cases concerned with silage inoculants and fungi. For over a decade, he has been involved in patent application drafting, prosecution, and oppositions and appeals in the European Patent Office. He also has extensive experience in dealing with plant variety rights in Europe and the United Kingdom for a wide variety of crops, including fungi, as well as managing plant variety right portfolios globally. His PhD in Plant Sciences from the University of Cambridge was focused on meiotic recombination rates among plant disease resistance gene clusters, and resulted in a publication on meiotic recombination rate heterogeneity.
