Soilless growing attracting attention from drought prone countries

Aponic Ltd has developed a soilless growing system that uses 90 per cent less water than traditional agriculture, does not emit harmful run-off into the environment, and reduces the dependence on fossil fuels. These advantages have attracted both national and international interest.

Jason Hawkins-Row, CEO of Aponic Ltd says: “Our vertical soilless growing system is now available to the public and commercial growers and we are now negotiating with South Africa, Kenya and Botswana at the government level to supply our systems directly to these countries.”

Although the system can be used outdoors, the Aponic system allows a considerable volume of produce to be grown in a small area, making it also suitable for undercover growing.

The vertical aeroponic tubes can be mounted almost anywhere. Just over a meter of wall space can house approximately 50 basil-type plants. In addition, the commercial models can be used to expand the growing area in expensive greenhouses as the vertical growing space turns acreage into volume. The commercial kits can house 100 plants per linear metre.

The company is also able to provide grow lights suited to the exact need of the indoor growing space which allows users to grow year-round.

The latest developments in under cover growing are to be discussed at the March Pollinator.
