Building soil carbon: building a healthier soil

UEA explores the benefits of improved soil carbon management and interventions that will build carbon stocks.

Evidence suggests that UK arable soils have been losing carbon for 40 years (Environment Agency, 2019), contributing significantly to the country’s CO2 emissions. This in turn presents a challenge to the current conventional cultivation of arable farmland, as it has been observed to have detrimental effects on the ecosystem and structures within soil.

Soil Salvation

Find out about the importance of soil carbon and an option to move carbon from the atmosphere into the soil via paper crumble in a presentation from Brian Reid, Professor of Soil Science and Associate Dean for Science (Innovation) at the University of East Anglia.

UEA and Greenworld Ltd: Building a healthier soil

Hear about a collaboration between researchers in the School of Environmental Sciences (UEA) and Greenworld Ltd, a recycling and waste management company based in Norfolk, that explores the potential of paper crumble as a means to enrich soil, improve retention of water and nutrients, and increase productivity. This interview includes Prof Brian Reid from UEA and Steve Kilham, Managing Director of Greenworld Ltd.

“The NFU has set a Net Zero 2040 aspiration to neutralise the carbon footprint of farming. Within this aspiration is the vision to make gains through improved soil carbon management and interventions that will build soil carbon stocks. We are looking forward to talking to farmers and growers about the opportunities to increase soil carbon and achieving Net Zero on the farm to help realise this vision.”

The Royal Norfolk Show may have been cancelled this year but we are keen that the ‘show must go on’ and are recreating the Innovation Hub experience virtually. It will offer an opportunity to drop in remotely to hear a topical discussion and discuss an emerging technology or a challenge directly with a technologist or researcher.
