Agri-TechExpress with University of Reading: Responsible innovation of autonomous farm robots: what do we need to do?
Wednesday 6th October @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
In this one hour session, we will discuss the social, legal, and ethical considerations associated with the use of autonomous farm robots and how we can overcome these challenges to adoption.
Autonomous farm robots are a key solution to the lack of labour caused by Brexit and the COVID pandemic. However, without due attention to the social, legal, and ethical aspects of their use on-farm, adoption may be delayed.
Tech developers and research scientists will be encouraged to anticipate and address adoption challenges in advance of implementation.
Farmers will be encouraged to think what changes might be needed on the farm in terms of infrastructure and human resource management to accommodate the responsible use of autonomous robots.
Policy-makers will be encouraged to think about adapting regulation to allow the responsible use of farm robots.
David Christian Rose, Elizabeth Creak Associate Professor of Agricultural Innovation and Extension, University of Reading, will use some findings from an Innovate UK project, Robot Highways, led by Saga Robotics with the Universities of Lincoln and Reading, BT, the MTC, Berry Garden Growers and Clockhouse farm.
