Agri-Tech Express with PBD Biotech: Heartbreak and hope – the story of a new diagnostic for bovine TB

Bovine TB has devastated the dairy industry. The current ‘test and cull’ regime has failed to eradicate the disease and comes at a high price to the taxpayer, herds and badgers.

Jonnie Yewdall, a former diary farmer, will describe: the impact of this disease on farmers and the industry; how a new test called Actiphage - that uses novel phage technology - offers a new approach to identifying carriers of the disease; the validation process and how improved disease management could eradicate not just bovine TB but also the wasting disease Johne’s.

Interested parties might include:

Livestock farmers – the current diagnostic for TB misses infected animals leaving a reservoir of disease in the herd.  A discussion of a new diagnostic and opportunity to get involved in validation trials for a revolutionary test for two economically devastating diseases.

Dairy industry – Actiphage can be used as a quality assurance tool for milk and as a rapid blood test for disease, detecting infected animals before they are able to spread the disease.

Researchers – phages offer an exciting new approach to diagnosis that is applicable to many diseases, of which TB is an interesting application. PBD Biotech’s journey from lab to field and the struggle to set up trials provides interesting learning points.

Vets – early sight of a diagnostic that has recently been awarded the Vet Record Innovation Award and has been proven infield to eradicate bTB when part of a disease management programme.

Diagnostics developers – there are opportunities to provide complementary technologies, also useful exploration of the journey to validation.

Investors – TB is currently a major global disease of humans and livestock for which there is currently no accurate, easy to administer test. Actiphage is addressing a huge unmet need.
