Agri-Tech Express with Lexington Communications – Trade issues affecting agri-tech
Tuesday 16th February @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am
Creating a global leader in Agri-Tech: why the UK must look again at the landscape for agricultural innovation
Lexington Communications is the UK’s leading strategy and communications consultancy, with a team made up of ex-Government advisers, former journalists and policy communications experts.
In this one hour session, Lexington will provide their insights into the current policy landscape for Agri-Tech in the UK, and discuss what is driving government decision-making in relation to the sector. The event will also provide advice on how to communicate effectively with Government and the media, outline what you need to do to achieve policy change, and how you can build your contacts and reputation in Westminster.
The UK’s Agri-Tech sector has all of the ingredients to become world-leading, but at present the political and regulatory landscape is holding the sector back from achieving this status. The UK’s science and research base is exceptional, home to a number of organisations from start-ups to established companies investing in exciting innovations, from drones to autonomous vehicles to ways of making our crops more resilient. These technologies could be game-changers for our farmers here in the UK, and have the potential to lead to real benefits for consumers as well.
However, in many cases, regulation trails behind the science. This is a problem in the context of the growing pressures on our farmers, including financial and climate concerns, while needing to produce enough food for a growing population. We need to ensure that farmers have access to as many supportive tools as possible to help them meet these challenges and remain globally competitive. Behind this, there will be economic benefit – the creation of globally successful agri-tech industry where the UK is the first choice for innovators to bring new ideas to market.
Following our departure from the EU, the Government has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to achieve this vision, and re-look at problematic regulation for the sector. The Agriculture Act has bought back significant powers from Brussels, but there is not yet clarity about how these powers will be used. In addition, the Government recognises the value of R&D driven industries such as Agri-Tech – at the heart of the Government’s post-Brexit economic policy is cementing the UK as a ‘science superpower’. There is no better time than now to be making the case to Government that the regulatory landscape must become more competitive in order to unlock the sector’s potential.
To do this, businesses in the sector need to communicate effectively with Government – identifying the right channels and stakeholders to enable their voices to cut through with policymakers and the general public. Lexington Communications is the UK’s leading strategy and communications consultancy, with a team made up of ex-Government advisers, former journalists and policy communications experts, and in this event, will talk through the opportunities to influence the new landscape, what you need to do to achieve policy change, and how to build your contacts and reputation in Westminster.
