The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK’s National Measurement Institute – a world-leading, centre of excellence that provides measurement science, engineering and technology supported by the expertise of more than 600 in-house scientific experts.
We undertake excellent science and engineering to deliver extraordinary impact for the UK and provide the measurement capability that underpins the UK’s prosperity and quality of life.
In agriculture, we have a track record of bringing new approaches to problem solving using our expertise to help address the challenges confronting agriculture across the entire food production and supply chain. From new crop development, resource management and on-shelf consumer challenges, NPL are working with our partners to enable greater yield and production efficiencies, as well as providing actionable data that will drive decision making.
Examples of successful collaborations that have delivered tangible benefits to our customers include 3D image-based phenotyping in research plots; assessing ripeness and automating harvest processes in fruit; the use of microwave technologies for crop imaging; non-destructive disease assessment in potato and the non-contact determination of sugar content in sugar cane.
These projects represent just a taste of the capabilities that NPL can bring to help solve problems in research, on the farm or throughout the logistics chain, and we are always delighted to have the chance to speak with customers no matter what their challenge.
