Farmer Charlie provides low-cost, smart, localised information and applications to farmers in remote and isolated places
Farmer Charlie is an innovative solution that brings internet connectivity and smart localised information to farmers wishing to improve their agricultural practice, increase the quality and quantity of their yield, and get information on the food chain.
Farmer Charlie consists of on-site sensors placed in the field or in a greenhouse and an app which brings the agribusiness ecosystem to the farmer. The sensors detect soil data (e.g., humidity, pH, temperature), which are processed and sent to farmers via tablet or mobile phone, using broadband internet communication.
Farmer Charlie provides a low-cost solution, that can be adapted to a wide range of crops and uses. The availability of real-time, regular agronomic data permits to control the use of pesticides, fertilisers, and irrigation, making Farmer Charlie a climate-friendly and net-zero, sustainable solution.
It is particularly suited to farmers located in remote areas, including – but not limited to – regions in least developed countries. Tailored applications can be hosted by the system, which offers a flexible platform that can be integrated and adapted to multiple aims.
It can also bring connectivity to broadband level to the field, and provide tailored systems for farmers, to answer specific needs.
Farmer Charlie is a commercial company born out of AB5 Consulting, a London-based SME specialising in innovative solutions for high-technology sectors. In 2017, AB5 was awarded a grant by the European Space Agency to conduct a feasibility study on applications and services enabled by satellite constellations. The outcome of that research generated the concept for Farmer Charlie. Both companies are led by CEO, Betty Bonnardel.
