Agrimetrics

Agrimetrics

Agrimetrics is the food and farming sector’s Data Marketplace. We enable organisations to safely share and monetise their data, whilst making it easier for data-consumers to access the information they need. Our goal is to help create a more productive and sustainable food system by enabling next-generation solutions as quickly and affordably as possible.

We are one of four centres for agricultural innovation founded with an initial investment from Innovate UK. Our founding partners are NIAB, SRUC, Rothamsted Research and The University of Reading. We have strategic partnerships with Airbus and Microsoft and are a participant in Microsoft’s prestigious AI for Earth programme.

Services:

Find Data: Explore the fastest growing catalogue of agricultural data, from crop analytics, GIS and weather data to ecological indicators, tools and models.

Monetise Data: Create new revenue streams for your organisation by marketing your data, applications and models on a safe and fair platform.

Manage your Data: Create a Private Data Exchange on our best-in-class data platform and focus your resources on hitting milestones, not maintaining infrastructure.

Data Enablement: Our experts help organisations understand and advance their data capabilities, including maturity assessments, data modelling and data integration.

Expressions of interest for crop yield competition wanted!

Do you think you could accurately predict the average UK winter wheat yield for 2021? Then we have a competition for you! Agrimetrics is looking to run a prediction market on Hivemind's Agora platform. Competitors will place bids throughout the year on the official DEFRA figures for the average UK Winter Wheat yield (tonnes/hectare). By participating you would be part of the first every competition of its kind for agriculture.

Agrimetrics’ new Data Marketplace

We set up the marketplace as a key way to realise our mission at Agrimetrics of accelerating the realisation of new value in the agri-food sector from data. For us it was important to identify a scalable way to serve the whole sector. We ultimately reduce the costs for both data providers and consumers in making data exchanges, enabling the value to flow faster, thus accelerating the industry. All this is part of the solutions the UK and the world needs to our major sustainability and food security challenges – a lack of adoption of data-informed solutions is holding back the sector, meaning sustainability, productivity and growth improvements are not being made as fast as they need to be. Like our food, we need sustainable data supply chains!

ClearSky technique to overcome cloud cover issues

Cloud cover is a major problem for satellite imaging as it distorts the data reducing its accuracy for applications such as early warning of crop disease. This issue is being addressed by ‘ClearSky’, a technique being developed by scientists at the University of Hertfordshire which uses radar data to fill the gaps caused by cloud cover. AI sees through the cloudsThe ClearSky project is led by astrophysicist Professor James Geach and enabled by Goonhilly Earth Station’s deep learning platform and supercomputer.

AI predicts wheat supply could drop 12% in 2020

AI suggests last year's wet Autumn has caused a 61% reduction in winter wheat on British farms, which supplies 80% of the wheat used by UK millers. Overall, wheat, barley and oat yields could drop by12%, 5% and 5% respectively. Agrimetrics have developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) capable of identifying crops using only satellite observations.

Half a million fed with food destined for bin

COVID-19 has highlighted a dichotomy in our food system. Whilst supermarket shelves are empty, thousands of tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables are spoiling in fields and warehouses across the country. The current situation has exaggerated an already pressing issue: up to 40% of fresh produce grown in the UK is wasted. Hounslow based start-up FruPro want this to stop. They are developing a communications and trading platform that connects the fruit and veg industry. Their goal is to reduce waste by creating a centralised platform that puts those with produce in touch with those who need it.

A Data Marketplace could solve Agriculture’s Big Problem

In the future, real-time disease models will overhaul the way we apply pesticides. Predictive maintenance will eliminate all but the most unpredictable machinery breakdowns – saving farmers time and money. And a data marketplace will enable farms and businesses to create new revenue streams through the safe and fair sharing of their data. Data is the catalyst for these innovations; data-sharing is a pre-requisite.
