Agri-Tech East's June Newsletter

As Defra's #Health and Harmony consultation came to a close it became clear that the agri-food industry has a great many stakeholders, all with diverse views of its future. But there is also optimism within policy-makers around the positive impact that agri-tech can have and a desire from many stakeholders to showcase and engage with innovation. We hosted a consultation for Defra to provide feedback on a potential innovation-funding framework (see the blog) and are offering opportunities for our members to present at Cereals 2018 and demonstrate in the Innovation Hub at the Royal Norfolk Show.

Pro-innovation succession planning on farms is key to embedding new practices into commercial reality. Michael Mack from Savills discusses this topic in the Professional Insights feature. It’s going to be a busy month – hope to see you at one of the events!

Registration now open for REAP 2018, 7th Nov, Cambridge; Read more below.

Robotic eyes, an electronic sugar beet, a rapid accurate test for bovine TB and a lightweight tracker for sheep are all among the demonstrations at the Innovation Hub at the Royal Norfolk Show. We are also hosting an Innovation Trail this year with a twitter challenge to add a bit of fun. Many thanks to Hub sponsor the British Beet Research Organisation. Find out more about the Hub.
Registration opens for REAP Conference 2018 Agri-Tech for a productive future; 7th Nov
Producing more with less is a reality in China. We are very excited to have Prof. Zhenling Cui, of the China Agricultural University, Beijing, to give his learning-points on his work with farmers. They used science to inform best practice, and the result (published in Nature) was a 20% uplift in yields of wheat with a cut in nitrogen application of 60%.
Other highlights of REAP include: the Start-up Showcase, which has been the launch-pad for a number of early companies and Emerging Agri-tech, where researchers present their latest findings. There are opportunities to participate in the technical exhibition or to sponsor, a limited number of bursaries available for farmers and students and member discounts and early bird prices for conference tickets.

Agri-Tech Week - a week of events; 5th – 9th November
The programme for Agri-Tech Week is coming together. We have some early information on the website with a line-up that includes workshops, seminars, speaker panels and hands-on activities. Topics ranging from big data to precision spraying, soil improvement and plant and environmental sciences, this is a chance to dedicate your week to agri-tech!
