Agri-Tech East's May Newsletter

With digitisation impacting every aspect of our lives, it seems natural that those who have grown up with this technology are seeing its potential for changing agrifood production - we saw this in action at our first GROW agri-hackathon and again at the Young Innovators' Forum conference, and our YIF visit to John Innes Centre. Technology is breaking down barriers and making agriculture more appealing as a career and we explore this in the blog and also within the Professional Insights feature, which this month is written by Jane Townsend of Easton and Otley College who has much to say about skills needs in the sector.

Waiting for Worms – 16 May, The Morley Agricultural Foundation
Just because you’ve got worms doesn’t mean your soil is healthy! There are three main types and each has a different role. Latest research – including an interactive study with farmers – is providing new insights into the benefits of earthworms and the microbes they support and this will be discussed by leading scientists from AHDB, Imperial College, Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and Rothamsted Research. Free to members, small charge for non-members, please register to learn more about worms here.
Innovation Insights at Cereals 2018 – 13 June, 3pm
We had a rapid response from our members when they were offered a chance to take part in a high-profile session at Cereals, a major event in the farming calendar. Agri-Tech East, in partnership with Cereals, is hosting the first ‘Innovation Insights’ at the show and has challenged member organisations to summarise their new products, service or platforms in a series of 2-minute lightning presentations. Participants are also being promoted in Cereals publications. And don't forget to visit the Innovation Hub at the Royal Norfolk Show on 27-28 June!
Post-Harvest Technologies: Keeping Crops Clean, Cool and (High) Quality – 20 June, Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research Facility
All that work only to lose half the value post-harvest! Put an end to the waste and join us at the Sutton Bridge facility to find out about their trials and new findings, particularly for storage of potatoes. Electronic noses, anyone? To find out more about crop storage innovation please register; FREE for members & levy payers, small charge for non-members.

Success at GROW Hackathon – from gaming-tech to weed-tech
Our first hackathon attracted an enthusiastic crowd of people; most were new to agriculture, and they brought with them lots of fresh ideas – such as the winner WeedSpot, which used a gaming engine to create 3D visualisations of weeds. Huge thanks to all our industry experts and everyone who got involved – we’ve made a short video of the day as well as a Storify summary of the high points of the weekend. Read more about the hackathon here.
