This month, we're looking back at the House of Lords and excursion to India, and forward to REAP and Agri-Tech Week

Agri-Tech East's October Newsletter

September has been one of our busiest months ever, taking us from Hyderabad to the House of Lords! Our member-only event at the House of Lords has stimulated some interesting discussions and it was wonderful to see so many members represented, taking up the chance to meet the network and interact with policy makers.

Agri-Tech East was also proud to be part of the Agritex 2017 conference in India along with our members KisanHub and Harper Adams University. We felt on common ground talking to farmers, tech developers and researchers about how they are tackling the issues that we share.
We will be reporting on some exciting developments shortly, and huge thanks to the agri-tech leads at the High Commissions in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chandaghar for the very warm welcome. Read our blog to find out more.

From Grass Roots to Blue Skies: A Vision For Agri-Tech

Agricultural production is stalling and the current farming model may be unsustainable but there is potential to make a radical improvement. Agri-Tech East’s members have identified a number of levers where productivity, sustainability and profitability can be increased and presented this in a report “From Grass Roots to Blue Skies: a vision for agri-tech” and launched at the House of Lords.

Start-up Showcase at REAP launchpad for business - 7th November
The REAP start-up showcase has provided a launch pad for 16 early stage companies and we have an exciting line-up planned for this year. Ella Kalnina of Arlabion explains how her company benefited from the the experience and PBD Biotech, which has developed a fast, effective and highly specific test for TB, is returning to be in the exhibition area.
Latest thinking and first in the field - Agri-Tech Week, 6-10 November
The striking thing about Agri-Tech Week is the calibre and diversity of the people taking part and the opportunities to interact with them. The events are designed to enable a free flow of discussion and ideas between all the participants.

The political landscape is changing rapidly and this is affecting agricultural policy. Argentinian farmer María Beatriz Giraudo will be providing her experiences at REAP including the mistakes they made and don't want the UK to repeat. 18 BASIS points will be available to event attendees over the course of the Week.
Trust, provenance, capital and worms – creating value with Agri-Tech in 2018
Everyone has their own jargon, whether technologist or farmer, and we are busting it this year by selecting the most relevant of the emerging technology streams and exploring its value for agriculture. Farming also has its ‘in phrases’ and we will de-mystify these and see how value can be achieved by taking a fresh approach. Here are a few of the events we are planning ...

Forecasting a barbecue weekend
John Shropshire is Director of G’s Growers, one of the largest producers of salad and vegetable crops in Europe. He is keen to adopt new technology where it offers significant benefits. John explains how joining Agri-Tech East connected his company to Microsoft and this led to an improved forecasting system to reduce waste.

30MHz to show “smart sensing toolkit” at REAP
“There’s this perception that the Internet-of-Things has to be large scale, but there are so many very basic challenges or questions in agriculture that can be solved just by installing a sensor,” says Joanna Madej, of 30MHz. The company will be demonstrating its “smart sensing toolkit” in the exhibition at REAP.
